CollegeConnection

NAVIANCE FAMILY CONNECTION

Family Connection from Naviance® is a web-based program that links counselors and schools with students and parents to improve college, and career planning.  We are pleased to make this resource available to all of our high school students and families, in addition to and as a complement to the array of college-related speakers and seminars we already offer at Waldwick High School.

While we anticipate heaviest usage of this program among our juniors and seniors, many of our younger students and their parents will find this tool to be helpful in longer-term planning. The Career component in Naviance makes this program an ideal site for our 9th and 10th graders to investigate career paths using the various personality and work related surveys to assist them in these endeavors. Think of Naviance as an Online Organizer between school and home. Guidance utilizes the data you record in Naviance to enhance your post-graduate plans.

We use the email feature in Naviance as the primary communication tool between Guidance, Students and Parents regarding announcements, publications, and the like.  Email should be checked a few times a week by all students and parents.  Seniors are the exception – as they should check their Email on a daily basis.

Waldwick High School is a paperless School!
The Email feature in Naviance is used exclusively by our Guidance office and by Principal Carroll.

HOW TO ACCESS THIS RESOURCE:

All currently enrolled Waldwick High School students (and parents) have been provided with a Registration Card which will allow them to sign on to Naviance and begin utilizing the array of features available.

THE COMMON APPLICATION

The Common Application is a standardized admission application that is accepted at approximately 400 colleges. Common applications can be done on- line at: www.commonapp.org

THE COMMON APPLICATION

Some Commonly Asked Questions / www.commonapp.org

WHAT IS THE COMMON APPLICATION?

The Common Application is a not-for-profit organization that serves students and member institutions by providing an admission application – online and in print – that students may submit to any of our nearly 300 members.

WHY USE IT?

Once completed online or in print, copies of the Application for Undergraduate Admission can be sent to any number of participating colleges. The same is true of the School Report, Midyear Report, and Teacher Evaluation forms. This allows you to spend less time on the busywork of applying for admission, and more time on what's really important: college research, visits, essay writing, and senior year coursework.

IS IT WIDELY USED?

Absolutely! Millions of Common Applications are printed and accepted by our members each year. In addition, last year almost half a million applications were submitted via the Common App Online. At some point this year we anticipate our 2,000,000th application overall will be submitted.

IS IT TREATED FAIRLY?

YES! Our college and university members have worked together over the past 30 years to develop the application. All members fully support its use, and all give equal consideration to the Common Application and the colleges own form. Many of our members use the Common Application as their only undergraduate admission application.

CAN ALL COLLEGES PARTICIPATE?

Membership is limited to colleges and universities that evaluate students using a holistic selection process. A holistic process includes subjective as well as objective criteria, including at least one recommendation form, at least one untimed essay, and broader campus diversity considerations. The vast majority of colleges and universities in the US use only objective criteria – grades and test scores – and therefore are not eligible to join. If a college or university is not listed on this website, they are not members of the consortium. Sending the Common Application to non-members is prohibited.

COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES VISITING WALDWICK

College representatives visit Waldwick High School on a regular basis from late September through early December.  On average we will have two to five per week.  Colleges visiting WHS are posted online in Naviance.  These visits are small and informal and provide a great opportunity for students to have access to a college recruiter in such a small group atmosphere.  Plan ahead if you would like to meet with a college representative.

You can sign-up online in Naviance and you will need approval from the teacher whose class you will miss.  You must print out a College Pass and get the teacher to sign their approval for the college visit.  College Passes are located on Naviance.  You must sign–up to register three (3) school days prior to the college visit. The registration window is closed three days prior in order for guidance to be able to locate adequate accommodations for this meeting.  You are responsible for making up any class work you will miss by attending the college visit.

Juniors are not allowed to register if the meeting coincides with an academic class.  Juniors are only allowed to miss (with the teacher’s prior approval) an elective/non-academic course.
