College Visits

3 Tips for Planning Your
College Visits - From Kaplan Test Prep

Whether you are visiting schools this spring, over the summer or both, following the tips below will help you make the most of your college visits.

Tip # 1 – Consider your interests when picking schools to visit
The first step in applying to college is figuring out which schools you want to apply to. Financial concerns and academic requirements are usually top considerations for most students, but there are other important factors that will play a significant role in which school you eventually decide to attend. The size of the campus, social and political atmosphere, extra-curricular activities and even the weather may sway your decision. By considering your interests and what type of college experience you wish to have, you'll be able to narrow that list of 20 to a few, top-choice schools you're now ready to visit.

Tip # 2 – Get the campus tour
It may sound hokey, but signing up for the on-campus tour is actually a smart idea. Most tour guides are current students, who usually provide advice and tidbits about the school you might not otherwise have learned on your own. You'll be able to see the school through the school's eyes, as the tour will be designed to showcase the best of what the college or university has to offer. Tours are also a great opportunity to test drive the campus.

It may not be feasible for you to visit colleges if it is too expensive or your schedule doesn't allow it so check to see if a virtual campus tour is available and ask to speak to current students on the phone or via Skype!

Tip # 3 – Visit the surrounding area
This is something that a lot of students underestimate. The school IS and should be the driving force in your decision, but where that school is located will also shape your experience. Attending a school in the heart of Los Angeles is a vastly different experience than attending one located in rural Vermont. Whether you prefer a small town you can easily drive around in or a bustling metropolis with public transit, take in the community that surrounds the college. The city or town will be your home as much as the school.
