1. Explore on your own - In addition to taking the
campus tour, take some time to explore the campus on your own. While
exploring, take the opportunity to talk to students.
2. Read the Bulletin Boards- Take some time to read
the flyers that are around the campus. These flyers will give you a
better idea of what activities are happening around the school.
3.Eat in the Dining Hall- This is a perfect
opportunity to taste how the food is and to observe the students. Watch
how everyone interacts, how is the mood in the dining hall? This will
give a good insight to life on campus.
4.Visit a Class in Your Major- If you know what major
you want to enter, see if you can schedule a visit to observe a class.
This will allow you to get a feel for the classes offered at your school.
5.Schedule a Conference with a Professor- This is a
great opportunity if you know what major you are entering into. By
speaking with a professor you can get a feel for the department, their goals,
what they envision for their classes and the opportunities within the major.
6. Talk to Lots of Students- When you take a guided
tour, the students who give the tour are given a script. By talking to
students who are attending the school you will get the real honest answer of
what is happening around school, what they like/dislike and you will get a
better understanding of the school. Don't be afraid to talk to students,
they were all visiting the school once too!
7. Sleep Over- If possible, spend a night at the
school. By staying the night in the residence hall you will see what an
average night is like at this school. What is going on around 11pm?
Are people friendly? Are people walking around in the residence
hall or is everyone's door closed keeping to themselves?
8. Take Pictures and Notes- Taking
pictures and notes of the school you are visiting will be beneficial to you
down the line. After visiting three or four schools, you may not remember
so clearly what each school offered. By taking notes and pictures you
have references to return to.
